A state of emergency has been declared in the Pacific nation of Vanuatu. The state of emergency was declared due to two consecutive earthquakes and two cyclones.
Two earthquakes of magnitude 6.5 and 5.4 struck on Friday. Just a day before, Cyclone Judy hit the islands. It caused damage and flooding across the country. However, no casualty has been reported yet.
Meanwhile, the locals are now preparing for another big cyclone. The cyclone has been named 'Kevin'. Hundreds of people fled their homes before Kevin hit. The cyclone is forecast to hit the country's capital on Friday night with a speed of 130 kilometers per hour.
Vanuatu Prime Minister Ismail Kalsakau said on Friday, 'We are a people of tolerance. We will go through it.'
Relief workers said that the situation in the area is indescribable. "It's crazy," said UNICEF's Eric Durpier. Vanuatu is used to natural disasters. But I think this is the first time that the country is going to face two cyclones.
Cyclone Judy hit the country last Wednesday causing flooding. Apart from this, roads, trees and houses have been damaged. Judy had maximum sustained winds of 200 kilometers per hour (124 mph).
