The British media BBC reported this information in a report on Thursday (March 2). According to the report, the fire, which disrupted the national power grid, was initially heard to have started in an open field. It later spread, damaging critical power lines in coastal areas and taking a nuclear power plant offline.
The blackout comes at a time when Argentina is experiencing a heat wave and drought. Summer months are still going on in the South American country. Due to this, the temperature in some parts of the country is consistently above 35 degrees Celsius. The BBC reports that the power outage has brought daily life to a standstill in parts of Argentina. Classes are suspended in educational institutions in those areas and businesses are closed. Many have to work or go without air conditioning or refrigeration.
According to this British press, Argentina's main cities have been the most affected by this blackout caused by a fire in the national electricity grid. In addition, approximately one and a half million people in the capital Buenos Aires metropolitan area are still without electricity. Argentina's energy ministry said it was confident that power would be restored soon.
Blackouts are not uncommon in Argentina, the BBC says. Earlier in 2019, hundreds of millions of people in Argentina as well as neighboring Uruguay suffered due to massive blackouts. In addition, hundreds of thousands of homes in Buenos Aires were plunged into darkness in 2020 due to separate power outages.
