Bhutan has set a target of eliminating malaria by 2025. The decision was taken after the country missed two targets in 2018 and 2020. According to the country's health minister, cross-border issues in the south have hampered the country's progress in achieving the status quo, especially during the coronavirus pandemic. -Bhutan Live
Bhutan recorded nine malaria cases last year. However, the ministry is reviewing whether these cases are community-based. It should be noted that malaria eradication does not mean complete eradication of malaria. According to the Health Minister, malaria elimination status is achieved when the country reports no indigenous or community cases. This means that malaria cases can still be imported even if the country achieves malaria elimination status.
Health officials are investigating each malaria case and then contact tracing and conducting a survey among others, the minister said. The ministry is said to have strengthened coordination with India besides strengthening measures to achieve the target.
He said, we also had a series of discussions on cross-border issues. Malaria is endemic in the south. Also, there are many transboundary problems with malaria. The minister said, we have a good partnership with the Government of India in malaria eradication. Hence, there is a need to strengthen communication between both the countries to eradicate all these activities.
Public awareness and prevention are some of the important steps to eliminate malaria. However, the minister said, disapproval from the people is the main challenge. If people agree with what we are saying, then I think we will achieve very quickly. We tell them not to keep still water, people keep still water, and wear long sleeves but no one listens. If you have symptoms, you have to report but people don't come. We are trying our best to collect information but at the same time people have to follow up."
The minister also said that it is important for everyone to take personal responsibility to eradicate this disease. To achieve malaria elimination status the country must report any malaria cases from indigenous or minority communities for three consecutive years. Bhutan has seen a sharp decline in malaria cases with only 23 cases in 2021. According to the Annual Health Bulletin, nine of these were reported from within the community.
