The Harem Boys School was opened on Sunday (February 26) after a devastating earthquake hit the rebel-held area of northwest Syria.
Ten-year-old Ward told media outlet Al Jazeera, "I'm very happy to be back at school because I'll see my friends here." Ward said he didn't lose any family members in the earthquake, but a classmate died.
"I'm so sad that he's not at school and I'll never see him again," says Ward. He was very smart and we played a lot of sports together.'
Students attending schools in rebel-held areas were rehearsing how to evacuate their homes to save themselves in the event of an earthquake in the future.
Ahmad Sheikh Ahmad, head teacher of Harem Boys School, said that the education board is planning and implementing this exercise for the sake of children's safety. "We have taught them that if they hear the sirens, they should line up silently from the classroom to the school grounds because everyone can stay in this flat space," Ahmad said.
Ahmad also said, "God forbid, if there is a strong earthquake, we asked them to cover their heads with their hands and go under the desk."
The headmaster said half the students came to school on Sunday. He believes that children coming to school can contribute to bringing back normalcy.
