North Korea, capable of launching a retaliatory nuclear attack at any time, announced Kim's missile launch near Japan
North Korea confirmed on Sunday that it had test-fired the Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) the previous day. According to a North Korean statement, North Korea carried out the test during a surprise launch exercise. The objective of the test was to demonstrate the country's capability to counter hostile forces. North Korea fired a long-range ballistic missile into the sea off Japan's west coast on Saturday afternoon after South Korea and the United States warned of a strong response to upcoming military drills.
In a separate statement on Sunday, Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, confirmed the missile test and warned the United States to be vigilant. The dictator's sister said the US is trying to misinform the UN Security Council about North Korea, which is nothing less than a hostile policy.
We watch the enemy's every move, can respond appropriately: Kim Yo Jong
Dictator's sister said I am warning that we will watch the enemy's every move and take appropriate and very strong and severe retaliation against his every hostile move.
South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said on Saturday that North Korea had fired a ballistic missile into the sea from its east coast. North Korea's move comes ahead of joint US-South Korea drills to be held in Washington next week. The Joint Chiefs of Staff said North Korea had fired an unidentified ballistic missile into the East Sea. Japan's coast guard also said North Korea had tested a ballistic missile, Al Jazeera reported.
This eastern sea is known as the Sea of Japan. The day before the launch, North Korea's foreign ministry threatened "unprecedented" action against South Korea. In December, North Korea fired two intermediate-range ballistic missiles into the East Sea, Yonhap news agency reported, citing the South Korean military.
