US President Joe Biden arrived in the capital of Ukraine, Kiev, on an unannounced visit on Monday for the first time since Russia launched an operation in Ukraine last year.
According to the American press CNN, four days later, it will be one year since the Russian attack on Ukraine. At such a time, Biden dramatically stepped into Ukraine without any prior announcement on Monday. Meanwhile, Biden has met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as well as First Lady Olena Zelenska at the Presidential Palace in Kiev.
Ukrainian President Zelensky invited Biden to visit Kiev a few months ago, saying he believed it was important for the US leader to see the situation up close, a White House statement said. Biden's visit was on that invitation, but due to his security reasons, this visit was not announced earlier
CNN also reported that Joe Biden was originally scheduled to visit Ukraine's neighboring country, Poland, on Monday evening. Before that, the US president suddenly went to Kiev this morning.
Meanwhile, a security lockdown has been imposed in the capital of Ukraine, Kiev, during Biden's visit. Traffic has been stopped. Even certain roads are closed to pedestrians. Meanwhile, air raid warning sirens sounded across Kiev. However, there were no Russian missiles or airstrikes.
"I am in Kiev today on the one-year anniversary of Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine," Biden said in a statement issued by the White House. Met with President Zelensky and reiterated our unwavering commitment to Ukraine's democracy, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Addressing Russian President Vladimir Putin, Biden said that when Putin launched his attack nearly a year ago, he thought Ukraine was weak and the Western world was divided, but he was wrong.
Biden also said there was no prospect of peace talks ending the conflict. In this situation, many of the American people do not want us to help Ukraine. Nevertheless, the United States will support Ukraine as long as necessary.
According to diplomatic analysts, Biden sent a clear message to Moscow about Washington's strong support for Kiev with this surprise visit.
Zelensky himself met with Biden in Washington in December and addressed the US Congress. It was his first trip outside of Ukraine since the outbreak of war.
Earlier, Western leaders including French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson have visited the country to show their support.
Several top lieutenants in the Biden campaign, including US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, also visited the Ukrainian capital to pledge new aid.
